On July 2, 1776 Richard Henry Lee made a motion for the independence of our country from Great Britain. This inspired John Adams to turn to his wife, Abigail, and say:
“I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, game […] sports, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this Continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.” – John Adams
For 239 years on July 4th we have done just this, in cities and towns around the nation. Independence Day has certainly become a time to celebrate. It also serves as a reminder of so much that has brought us to where we are today. Our country is not without struggles, but there are many brave souls to thank who have sacrificed in the face of those struggles. Our nation’s story is an inspiring one. So as you celebrate with friends, family, and loved ones this holiday, please remember to take a moment to commemorate those brave individuals who have made, and continue to make, our freedom possible.
